Steel Washers

Washers (hardware) come in a variety of sizes at Phoenix Specialty Manufacturing. Outside diameters range from .05” to 6”. Thickness ranges from .0005” to .260”. Our company has been the premier choice for washer parts for more than 100 years because our measurements are precise, and we offer parts in more than 300 materials. Steel washers are just one of our many parts that are ready to ship to your location on the same day you order. We do process custom orders quickly as well, but these may take a little longer than our ready-made items.

Why Steel?

One of the most common materials requested or used for washer production is steel. Steel is widely used in construction because of its hardness and tensile strength. Keeping these properties in mind, steel is the ideal choice for washers because it is very effective in reducing loosening due to vibration. Steel can also prevent corrosion by insulating screws.

Types of Washers

There are three main types of washers:

  • Plain: These are your standard varieties, including plain, fender, penny, spherical, anchor place, and torque.
  • Spring: Belleville, curved disc spring, wave washers all fall under this category.
  • Locking: Split and spring lock washers as well as toothed lock, serrated washers are included in this category. (Note: Phoenix Specialty does not offer traditional split/lock washers, but we do offer serrated washers.)

Washers are used in a wide variety of industries for various purposes:

  • Construction—for railways, infrastructure, appliances, buildings, bridges
  • Automotive
  • Mechanical—for pipelines, mining, shipbuilding
  • Aerospace
  • Heavy equipment
  • Home furnishings
  • And others

Phoenix Specialty offers all three in different materials.

Heat-Treated Steel

Heat-treated steel washers are called hardened washers. This is because during the process, the steel is hardened more than the natural state. This option is beneficial for some projects because the result is a more fracture-resistant steel. Heat-treating processes vary, but most include three steps: annealing, quenching, and tempering.

Industries That Use Steel

Steel is the metal of choice in many industries:

All of these industries need reliability and durability when constructing components because millions of people depend on their projects in everyday life. Railways get heavy traffic and need to withstand the pressure. Joints in bridges need to have the right amount of sturdiness combined with flexibility for changing weather elements, pressure, and traffic. These are just a couple of examples of how steel washers play a role in construction.

Steel washers provide needed durability because of the natural properties and the properties it takes on when it goes through a heat treatment. Bolted joints require hardened steel to prevent preload due to Brinelling after torque is applied.
