A History of Excellence, A Future of Exceptionalism

Phoenix Specialty is a fourth-generation family-owned business established February 26, 1907 in New York, New York originally providing washers and gaskets for a number of local industries, including power utilities and railroads.
After Mr. Albert H. Lowman purchased the company in 1927, it expanded into more stamped parts and began to specialize in metal washers, servicing both distributors and manufacturers.

Years later in 1960 when Mr. Robert R. Hurst, Sr. became Executive Vice-President, customer bases grew and production facilities modernized. Tooling for special washers was standardized and stocking of finished parts was initiated to set the stage for further growth.

In 1967, Phoenix Specialty relocated to Bamberg, South Carolina, becoming a nationally- recognized company that served thousands of OEMs. Expansion was seen in the customer base, the industries served, and the raw materials inventory.

Growth continued as Phoenix expanded into the aerospace industry in 1998, and later became one of the first companies to receive AS registration and accreditation.

The company celebrated its 100th year of business in 2007 and continued to ensure its growth by making significant investments in CNC, Wire EDM and waterjet equipment, as well as updated presses.

In 2022, Phoenix Specialty completed a $6.2 million expansion on its Bamberg, SC facility, allowing the company to make its processes more efficient and allow more room for growth. While a lot has changed in over a century, the team at Phoenix Specialty remain steadfast in the pursuit of its mission and take great pride to reinvest in the great country that makes today’s success a possibility. Here’s to the future!
